Carbon-Consuming Bacteria
Researchers Created an E. Coli Strain That Consumes Carbon-Dioxide
Daniel Johnson — December 2, 2019Researchers developed an E. coli strain that is able to consume carbon-dioxide. Typically E. coli feeds on sugars, however, the researchers were able to create a strain that can feed on different sources. Previous efforts to create carbon dioxide consuming strains were only partially successful, where individuals created strains of the bacteria that would only incorporate carbon dioxide into its diet.
The research could have significant implications for carbon reduction in general. However, it could also be used to in the production of biofuels. In the future, the technology could be implemented on a large scale to reduce carbon emissions. The researchers stated that currently, the project is only a proof of concept, and it will have to be further developed.
