Vollebak's Black Algae T-Shirt Captures CO2 from the Environment
Laura McQuarrie — August 4, 2021References: designtaxi & vollebak
With its innovative Black Algae T-Shirt, Vollebak is on a mission to "reinvent the way in which the color itself is made." The biodegradable t-shirt itself is made with eucalyptus, beech, and spruce from responsibly managed forests, and an eco-friendly carbon black ink. Working with US biomaterials company Living Ink, Vollebak found that an algae cell is almost identical in size to a carbon black pigment and it can create the same color.
Thanks to the fact that black algae is available in abundance, it has the potential to become an alternative for carbon black at scale and Vollebak sees the potential for the fashion industry to adopt a new, more sustainable kind of black.
