A new breakthrough at the University of California Santa Cruz has unlocked a cost-effective method for producing cheap biodiesel from waste cooking oil. This simplified process operates near room temperature, using sodium tetramethoxyborate as a catalyst, and converts 85% of used oil into clean fuel without the need for complex refineries. Tested on various oils, including fast-food waste oil, it produces biodiesel in under an hour, making it highly efficient.

This method cuts energy costs and expands biodiesel production to small-scale producers, such as farms and food processors. It supports waste reduction by repurposing cooking oil that might otherwise end up in landfills or sewage systems, all while decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

With transportation sectors seeking alternatives to petroleum-based fuels, this innovation offers a scalable, eco-friendly solution. Simplifying production and cutting costs could significantly broaden the use of biodiesel, especially in industries reliant on heavy-duty diesel engines, helping reduce the sector’s carbon footprint.
