Upcycled Oyster Shell Paints
Cool Roof France is Using Discarded Oyster Shells in its BaseCoat
Colin Smith — October 25, 2024Cool Roof France has developed BaseCoat, a base coating for roofs that utilizes upcycled oyster shells as a key ingredient. This innovative product replaces traditional calcium in roof paint with calcium derived from discarded oyster shells, a byproduct in France amounting to 130,000 tonnes annually. BaseCoat is a single-component, aqueous-phase product that is white, opaque, and free from volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. The use of biosourced raw material, Ostrecal oyster shell powder, enhances the eco-friendliness of the product while providing effective adhesion and thermo-reflective properties.
The application of BaseCoat involves a three-layer process that significantly reduces building temperatures by six to seven degrees Celsius. This reduction in temperature helps cut energy costs associated with cooling buildings, making it a sustainable solution for enhancing energy efficiency. By repurposing oyster shells, Cool Roof France addresses waste management issues and contributes to a circular economy, promoting environmental sustainability in the construction industry.
BaseCoat's development reflects Cool Roof France's commitment to innovative and eco-friendly building solutions. The company's approach not only reduces the environmental impact of construction materials but also supports the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and conserving natural resources. As the demand for sustainable building practices grows, products like BaseCoat play a crucial role in advancing the industry towards greener and more energy-efficient solutions.
