Climate-Conscious Bamboo Cooling Devices

AREP Designed the Adiabatic Urban Cooling Device

AREP, a French multidisciplinary firm, developed an alternative, energy-efficient cooling device. The device is made from bamboo and is a sustainable alternative to traditional air conditioners. The firm tested the prototype in Seoul. Vietnam often experiences unbearable heatwaves, especially as climate change impacts the world's weather conditions.

AREP aims to offer a low-tech and affordable means for cold air. The designers formed a hyperboloid bamboo structure for structural stability. The tower naturally cools air through the adiabatic principle, which uses the natural freshness of water. AREP's architects and specialists explained the tower's functional aspect as follows: "to evaporate, water needs energy, which is absorbed from the heat of the ambient air, thus generating the cooling effect."
