Maple Seed-Inspired Radiosondes
airXeed's Radiosonde is Designed to Reduce Weather Balloon Waste
Colin Smith — December 4, 2024The AirXeed Radiosonde is a reusable, nature-inspired sensor designed to enhance weather prediction while reducing environmental impact. Developed by postdoctoral researchers Shane Kyi Hla Win and Danial Sufiyan from the Singapore University of Technology and Design, the AirXeed Radiosonde mimics the autorotation of falling maple seeds to achieve a controlled descent after being launched by weather balloons. This innovative design allows the radiosonde to collect atmospheric data during both ascent and descent, providing more comprehensive weather data compared to conventional single-use radiosondes.
Traditional radiosondes, which are typically used once and then discarded, contribute significantly to electronic waste and environmental pollution. In contrast, the AirXeed Radiosonde is designed to be retrieved and reused, significantly reducing e-waste and operational costs. The device's onboard controller, equipped with machine learning algorithms, ensures a soft landing at designated collection points, further enhancing its sustainability and efficiency.
The AirXeed Radiosonde has been recognized for its innovative approach to sustainability, winning the James Dyson Award for Sustainability in 2024. By addressing the environmental issues associated with conventional radiosondes and improving the quality of atmospheric data collection, the AirXeed Radiosonde represents a significant advancement in the field of weather forecasting and environmental conservation.
