Recycled Material Toilet Paper

Japan Cities X Poppy Paper Company launch Used Diaper Toilet Paper
Georgia Wray Norsten — March 8, 2025The Poppy Paper Company is pioneering an unexpected approach to sustainability by converting used diapers into toilet paper. In collaboration with the cities of Shibushi and Osaki, Japan, this initiative aims to tackle diaper waste while providing an alternative source of raw materials. The company blends the material with recycled paper to produce an eco-friendly toilet paper option by sanitizing, bleaching, and shredding used diapers into pulp. With traditional paper supplies expected to decline, this innovation represents a significant step toward a circular economy.
Since launching in April 2024, the program has repurposed 98 tons of used diapers, resulting in 30,000 toilet paper rolls within the first two months. The affordability of these rolls, priced at just $2.70 per dozen, makes them accessible to eco-conscious consumers looking for sustainable alternatives. The initiative also addresses waste management challenges by diverting hygiene products from incinerators and landfills.
If widely adopted, this model could revolutionize recycling practices worldwide, turning everyday waste into valuable resources for a more sustainable future.
