Locus Fermentation Solutions is an Ohio-based biosurfactant company that is working to replace the harmful use of palm-based ingredients in self-care products, such as shampoo or body wash. The company uses yeast fed with sugar to make a product called 'sophorolipids,' which is a surfactant fit for use in self-care products.
Locus Fermentation Solutions has stated that products made with this surfactant as opposed to palm-based ingredients function in a similar way where dirt and oil is pulled from the body or hair, and the product foams up to show that it is working. If this ingredient becomes widely utilized in the self-care industry, the cost of products will go down as it is cheaper to produce, and the environmental impact of the industry will go down as these surfactants are lab-grown rather than extracted from nature.
On top of this, Locus Fermentation Solutions runs its entire factory on renewable energy, meaning the company contributes a net-neutral amount of carbon emissions.
