Most people have no idea where their pantry spices come from but Burlap & Barrel is the public benefit corporation devoted to changing this by building equitable, transparent and traceable supply chains. Burlap & Barrel sets itself apart by partnering directly with smallholder spice farms and foragers and it pays as much as 10 times the commodity price.
“We’re taking on centuries-old systems that disconnect spice farmers from home cooks, and by bypassing layers of middlemen, our partner farmers make more money, and you get spices that are fresher, higher quality and traceable back to origin,” said Ethan Frisch, one of the co-founders and co-chief executive officers.
Some of the single-origin spices that are offered by the brand include ground black lime, wild mountain cumin and royal cinnamon.
