The 'Avants Project' redefines technical outdoor wear by utilizing natural materials instead of synthetic fibers, which have long dominated the sportswear industry. Created by industrial design student Juliette Masson as her diploma project at ECAL, Avants challenges the environmental impact of traditional performance fabrics by offering sustainable alternatives like linen and waxed cotton. These materials provide durability, water resistance, and thermo-regulating properties without the ecological footprint of synthetic textiles.

The project draws inspiration from historical garments and fastening techniques, adapting them to modern performance needs. By eliminating petroleum-based fibers, Avants demonstrates that outdoor apparel can balance functionality and sustainability. Waxed cotton ensures water resistance and abrasion protection, while linen offers breathability and hypoallergenic benefits, making the garments suitable for various climates and conditions.

Masson’s Avants Project highlights the potential for sustainability in performance apparel, proving that technical clothing can be innovative and environmentally responsible. This initiative encourages a shift in outdoor fashion, promoting designs prioritizing nature and performance.
