NatureWorks’ Extend Platform is setting a new benchmark in sustainable packaging by improving the efficiency and compostability of BOPLA (biaxially oriented polylactic acid) films. This latest addition to the company’s Ingeo PLA biopolymer portfolio enhances manufacturing productivity and environmental performance, addressing the growing demand for scalable, plant-based alternatives to fossil-fuel plastics.

With its debut grade, 'Ingeo Extend 4950D,' the platform allows films to stretch up to seven times using existing BOPP equipment, significantly lowering production costs while boosting output. Beyond technical gains, this new material degrades up to eight times faster than standard PLA, making it an ideal fit for compostable packaging in hard-to-recycle formats like condiment packets, snack wrappers, and coffee pod lids. These items often contain food residue and are better suited for composting than traditional recycling methods.

The Extend Platform also supports broader climate goals by reducing plastic waste and methane emissions from landfills. By helping brands meet extended producer responsibility and packaging waste regulations, NatureWorks is making sustainable, compostable packaging more viable at a commercial scale.
