Climate-Neutral Wine Bottles
The Wiegand-Glas Ecobottle is Made from 93% Recycled Glass
Jana Pijak — September 9, 2020Wiegand-Glas has joined forces with an academic group of undergraduate International Wine Business majors to launch EcoBottle, "a climate-neutral wine bottle made of guaranteed 93% recycled glass."
The German glass manufacturer is addressing a common issue arising during the glass production process -- the creation of CO2 emissions despite a bottle's otherwise recyclable design.
The result is a sustainable bottle solution that is made primarily from recycled glass, reducing CO2 emissions. The climate-neutral bottle is the world's first wine vessel of its kind and boasts a light-weight design that is 20% lighter than traditional bottles on the market. The weight-reduced bottle has a 0.75 liter capacity and weighs just 390 grams. In addition to convenience, the weight reduction allows for "more efficient use of raw and recycled materials, as well as a reduction in transportation costs for the suppliers and consumers."
